These monochrome images have been taken in a variety of locations around the world, ranging from here in the UK to as far afield as Australia. To avoid duplication or confusion each image is placed in one collection only, although some could comfortably sit in more .
Without the distraction of colour I can concentrate on the structure of a composition and bring out shape, patterns and textures. By varying how original colours are converted to shades of grey, I try to enhance graphic elements and establish some mood to a composition. Lighting and contrast are integral to this process and I like to experiment with the tonal values, working with different interpretations of the same scene until I’m happy with the visual effect. Even then, before making a final decision, I will often 'sit' on the finished image for a while as the passage of time may change my perceptions and preferences. Reworking an image is never off the agenda.
The images have been taken with both digital and film cameras, using Konica Minolta or Nikon dedicated film scanners for the film stock.
